Was Noah Driven Out? (54:9), (11:38)

54:9 appears to say Noah was driven out, yet 11:38 shows his people passing by and mocking him while he built the ark. The claim is that Noah cannot be both expelled and still nearby.

The false claim: 54:9 contradicts 11:38 - Noah cannot have been expelled from his people while simultaneously building the ark among them.

The contradiction is produced entirely by a mistranslation of one Arabic word.

The Arabic word izdugir at the end of 54:9 does not mean "driven out" or "expelled from the country." Its correct translation is "jeered away" or "persecuted." The verse is describing the contempt and ridicule directed at Noah - not a formal expulsion from the territory.

[54:9] The people of Noah disbelieved before them. They rejected our servant and said, "Crazy!" He was persecuted.

[11:38] While he was building the ark, whenever the leaders of his people passed by, they ridiculed him. He said, "You may be ridiculing us now, but we will ridicule you just as you are ridiculing."

11:38 and 54:9 are therefore fully consistent. Noah was mocked, persecuted, and jeered at by his people (54:9), and those same people continued to pass by him and ridicule him while he built the ark (11:38). Both verses describe ongoing contempt from a population that remained in proximity to Noah throughout the ark's construction. There is no geographic incompatibility between them once the correct translation of izdugir is used.

The claim rests entirely on an inaccurate English rendering of one Arabic word.
