Is the Messenger Allowed to Seek Forgiveness for His People or Not? (4:64), (9:80)
4:64 states that the messenger seeking forgiveness for his people would benefit them. 9:80 states that even if he sought forgiveness seventy times, God would not forgive them. The claim is that these two verses directly contradict each other.
The false claim: The Quran contradicts itself on whether the messenger's intercession for forgiveness is effective.
The two verses address two categorically different groups of people, and reading each verse in its context makes this immediately apparent.
[4:64] We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed in accordance with GOD's will. Had they, when they wronged their souls, come to you and prayed to GOD for forgiveness, and the messenger prayed for their forgiveness, they would have found GOD Redeemer, Most Merciful.
The people in this verse are believers who sinned and repented. Their return to God is what qualifies them to benefit from the messenger's intercession. God's response - that He is Redeemer and Merciful - confirms that the conditions for forgiveness are met.
[9:80] Whether you ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them - even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times - GOD will not forgive them. This is because they disbelieved in GOD and His messenger. GOD does not guide the wicked people.
The reason forgiveness is unavailable here is stated plainly: these people disbelieved in God and His messenger. No amount of intercession can substitute for the belief and repentance that forgiveness requires. The prophet seeking forgiveness for them does not change their condition because their condition - active disbelief - is what places them outside the scope of forgiveness.
The two verses together establish a coherent and consistent principle: forgiveness may be sought for those who believe and repent, and cannot be obtained for those who persist in disbelief. The messenger's intercession operates within the conditions God has established, not outside them. No contradiction exists.
