Did Jesus Really Die? (3:144), (4:158)
3:144 states that all messengers before Muhammad passed away. 4:158 states that Jesus was raised to God alive. The claim is that these two verses contradict each other.
The false claim: 3:144 says all previous messengers died, while 4:158 says Jesus did not die - a direct contradiction.
Two things need to be established: what 3:144 actually says, and what the Quran teaches about the death of the righteous.
[3:144] Muhammad was no more than a messenger like the messengers before him. Should he die or get killed, would you turn back on your heels? Anyone who turns back on his heels does not hurt GOD in the least. GOD rewards those who are appreciative.
The verse does not say that all messengers before Muhammad died in the ordinary sense. It says they passed away - they are no longer present among us. The verse's purpose is to address the believers' attachment to Muhammad and warn them against abandoning their faith if he were to die or be killed. It is not making a theological statement about the precise nature of every previous messenger's departure from this world.
The Righteous Do Not Truly Die
The Quran teaches explicitly that the righteous do not die in the ultimate sense:
[3:169] Do not think that those who are killed in the cause of GOD are dead; they are alive at their Lord, being provided for.
[2:154] Do not say of those who are killed in the cause of GOD, "They are dead." They are alive, but you do not perceive.
When the righteous depart this world, what appears to those around them as death is in reality a transition - the soul leaves the earthly body and moves to be with God. From the perspective of those remaining on earth it looks like death. From the perspective of what actually occurs, the righteous are alive with their Lord.
The Case of Jesus
The Quran describes what happened to Jesus specifically:
[3:55] GOD said, "O Jesus, I am terminating your life, raising you to Me, and ridding you of the disbelievers. I will exalt those who follow you above those who disbelieve, till the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is the ultimate destiny of all of you, then I will judge among you regarding your disputes."
[4:157] And for claiming that they killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of GOD. In fact, they never killed him, they never crucified him - they were made to think that they did. All factions who are disputing in this matter are full of doubt concerning this issue. They possess no knowledge; they only conjecture. For certain, they never killed him.
God raised the soul of Jesus before his enemies could carry out their design. What was arrested, tried, and crucified was a body from which Jesus had already departed. His enemies did not triumph over him - which is precisely what the Psalms confirm:
My enemy does not triumph over me. (Psalms 41:10-11)
The prayer recorded in Hebrews was answered by the One who was able to save Jesus from death:
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. (Hebrews 5:7)
The silence of Jesus before Herod, recorded in Luke 23:8-11 - where he made no response to prolonged questioning despite being a man known for his teachings - is consistent with a body whose soul had already departed: present physically, but absent in every other sense.
3:144 notes that the messengers before Muhammad passed away. 4:158 describes the specific manner in which Jesus passed - his soul raised to God before the crucifixion, his body left behind. Both are true, and neither contradicts the other.
