The Phrase "An Old Woman" Lacks Respect

Two objections are raised here. First, that 26:170-171 and 7:83 contradict each other in their accounts of Lot's wife. Second, that describing her as "an old woman" is disrespectful to a prophet's wife.

The false claim: 26:171 and 7:83 give conflicting accounts, and calling Lot's wife an old woman is demeaning.

Neither objection holds up.

The two verses in question:

[26:170-171] So we saved him and all his family. Except an old woman who lagged behind.

[7:83] We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was with the laggards.

On the alleged contradiction: there is none. Both verses describe the same event - the destruction of Lot's people and the saving of Lot and those with him, with the exception of his wife. 7:83 identifies her as his wife. 26:171 describes her as an old woman. These are two descriptions of the same person, each providing different information about her. One gives her relationship to Lot, the other her age. Noting that a person is someone's wife and noting that she is elderly are not competing statements - they are complementary ones. The same woman was both.

On the question of disrespect: the objection mistakes description for insult. The Quran is stating a fact about Lot's wife - she was old. Describing a person's age is not a slight against them. The Quran uses precise, factual language throughout. It describes physical and circumstantial realities without ornamental softening that might obscure meaning. Lot's wife was an old woman. That is what she was. The verse records it plainly.

If anything, the description reinforces a Quranic principle: age confers no automatic standing before God. Youth does not excuse disbelief, and old age does not sanctify it. Lot's wife had lived a long life in the company of a prophet, witnessed his message, and chose to remain with the people who rejected it. Her age is recorded as part of the factual account of what happened, not as a term of contempt. There is no disrespect in being old, and there is no disrespect in the Quran's use of the description.
