Corruption of Islam: Rites/Practices

I. The Rites Are Older Than the Scholars

Every religious practice of Submission - the testimony, the ablution, the Contact Prayers, the obligatory charity, the fast, the pilgrimage - was decreed by God and delivered to us through Abraham, generations before Muhammad was born. The Quran states this lineage explicitly: Muhammad himself was commanded to "follow the religion of Abraham, the monotheist" (16:123), and God tells us that Abraham and his descendants were taught "how to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat)" (21:73). The Salat already existed at the Sacred Masjid before the Quran was revealed (8:35), and the hypocrites of Muhammad's own time were already observing it lazily (9:54) - a practice cannot be neglected unless it already exists.

This single historical fact dismantles the foundation on which the scholars built their empire. The rites did not come from hadith books compiled two centuries after the prophet's death. They came from God, through Abraham, carried by continuous practice from generation to generation, and they arrived complete.

[9:36] The count of months, as far as GOD is concerned, is twelve. This has been GOD's law, since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred. This is the perfect religion; you shall not wrong your souls (by fighting) during the Sacred Months.

"This is the perfect religion." Perfection leaves no room for improvement. Yet improvement is precisely what the scholars of traditional Islam claimed to offer - additions, refinements, expansions, and restrictions layered onto each rite, sourced not from God's Book but from hearsay attributed to the prophet against his will. The Quran has a name for this arrangement:

[42:21] Or do they have partners who legislate for them of the religion what God did not authorise? Had it not been for a decisive Word, they would have already been judged. Indeed, the transgressors shall have a painful punishment.

What follows is an examination of the rites, one by one - what God decreed, and what was added, subtracted, or frozen in His name. The pattern that emerges is not scattered error. It is systematic legislation by unauthorized legislators.

II. The Shahada: The First Pillar, Amended

The First Pillar of Submission is the testimony God Himself pronounces, and He pronounces it in His Book so that no human being would ever need to invent one:

[3:18] God bears witness that there is no other god besides Him, and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge.

La ilaha illa Allah. There is no other god besides God. That is the testimony - whole, complete, and sufficient, exactly as God stated it.

Traditional Islam amended it. The name of Muhammad was appended to God's own testimony, and the amended version was then made the gateway of the religion - recited in the call to prayer, taught to children as their first sentence of faith, and demanded of every convert. As Dr. Rashad Khalifa documented in Appendix 13 of his translation: "Millions of Muslims have adopted Satan's polytheistic version, and insist upon mentioning the name of Muhammad besides the name of God."

God, in His mercy, did not leave us without a test for this exact corruption:

[39:45] When GOD ALONE is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion. But when others are mentioned beside Him, they become satisfied.

Try it. Recite the testimony as God states it in 3:18 - God alone, no other name - and observe the reaction it provokes among those raised on the amended version. The discomfort itself is the verse fulfilling its function. For the full case, see The Shahada.

III. Ablution: Four Steps Became Ten

God legislated the ablution in His Book, and He legislated it in one verse:

[5:6] O you who believe, when you observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), you shall: (1) wash your faces, (2) wash your arms to the elbows, (3) wipe your heads, and (4) wash your feet to the ankles.

Four steps. Numbered by God's own sentence structure, in a Book that calls itself fully detailed (6:114).

The scholars were not satisfied. Through hadith, they added the rinsing of the mouth, the sniffing of water into the nostrils, the wiping of the ears and the neck, the washing of hands before the face, and the tripling of every action - then graded their additions as "sunnah" and "mustahabb," inventing a vocabulary of authority for practices God never mentioned. They then multiplied the list of things that supposedly nullify the ablution, burdening believers with anxiety over a rite God gave in one verse. The arithmetic of it should trouble every sincere heart: God decreed four steps, the scholars decreed more - and the Muslims of today observe the rules of their scholars over the rule of their Lord.

Some will ask: what is the harm in washing more? None - hygiene is not the issue. A person may wash as much as they please. The corruption is not in the water; it is in the authority. The moment extra steps are taught as part of the religious rite, their teacher has legislated religion beside God (42:21), and has implied that God's fully detailed Book was insufficiently detailed. A prophet commanded to follow only what was revealed to him (6:50) would not have modified God's own prescribed method of purification - and the hadith that claims he did testifies against itself. See The Pre-Requisites of Salat and Hadith: Contradictions with the Quran.

IV. Salat: A Gift Turned Into Idolatry

The corruption of the Contact Prayers operates on two levels: a corrupted story about where Salat came from, and a corrupted practice inside the prayer itself.

The corrupted origin story

The famous ascension narrative of the hadith collections claims that Salat was decreed during the prophet's Night Journey - initially as fifty daily prayers, bargained down to five after repeated trips back to God on the advice of Moses.

Set aside what this story implies about God - a Lord who must be haggled with, who did not know that fifty was too many. The Quran refutes the story at its root: Salat did not originate in Muhammad's lifetime at all. Abraham and his descendants were already taught the Contact Prayers (21:73), the Salat was already being observed at the Sacred Masjid (8:35), and Abraham implored God to keep him and his descendants steadfast in it (14:40). A rite cannot be decreed at the ascension when the Quran records it being practiced generations earlier. The story is not history; it is manufactured legitimacy - an origin myth that makes the hadith corpus, rather than Abraham's continuous practice, the custodian of the prayer.

The corrupted practice

Inside the prayer, traditional Islam inserted the commemoration of Muhammad and his family - in the tashahhud, in the salawat appended to it, and in the amended shahada recited within. Dr. Khalifa's verdict in Appendix 15 is unsparing: "This most important duty in Islam (Submission) has been so severely distorted that the contact prayers (Salat) have become a practice in idolatry for the vast majority of Muslims," for they "insist on commemorating 'Muhammad and his family'" during the prayers - a practice that renders the prayers null and void.

The Quranic principle violated is absolute:

[72:18] The places of worship belong to GOD; do not call on anyone else beside GOD.

The Salat is a meeting with God. No third party belongs in it - not a prophet, not a family, not a saint. The prayer as God gave it, five times daily in seventeen units, is detailed on this site: Prayer (Al-Salat), How to Perform Salat, and Salat: Physical Ritual.

V. Zakat: A Living Duty Frozen Into an Annual Tax

God tied the obligatory charity to the moment of receiving, not to the calendar:

[6:141] ...You shall give the due alms on the day of harvest...

The Zakat of Submission is 2.5% of one's net income, given when the income arrives - the wage earner's "day of harvest" is payday - and given to recipients God Himself listed: the parents, the relatives, the orphans, the poor, and the traveling alien (2:215).

The scholars re-engineered this living duty into an annual tax. In traditional Islam, Zakat is calculated once a year, on accumulated savings that have sat untouched for a full lunar year, and only above a minimum threshold ("nisab") priced in gold and silver - with separate schedules for livestock, crops, and merchandise, none of which appear in God's Book as conditions of the duty. The practical result inverts God's design: the believer who spends what they earn may owe nothing at all, the poor wait a year for what God attached to the day of harvest, and a continuous act of purification became an accounting exercise. See What is Zakat? and How to Practice Zakat.

VI. Hajj: Four Months Compressed Into Six Days

Here the corruption is not an addition but an amputation. God appointed an ample season for the pilgrimage:

[2:197] Hajj shall be observed in the specified months.

Months - plural. The four Sacred Months of 9:36: Zul-Hijjah, Muharram, Safar, and Rabi I, the 12th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd months, running consecutively (see The Months of Hajj for the full derivation from the Quran's own language and mathematics).

Traditional Islam abolished the season. The scholars confined the entire Hajj to roughly six days - the 8th through the 13th of Zul-Hijjah - cramming a pilgrimage God spread across a third of the year into less than one week of a single month. And the error runs deeper than scheduling: traditional Islam misidentified the Sacred Months themselves, teaching that they are Rajab, Zul-Qi'dah, Zul-Hijjah, and Muharram - the 7th, 11th, 12th, and 1st months. Look at that list carefully. It is not even consecutive. The Quran describes the Sacred Months passing in one unbroken sequence (9:5), each flowing into the next; a set of months scattered across the calendar cannot be the months God consecrated.

God addressed the manipulation of His calendar directly:

[9:37] Altering the Sacred Months is a sign of excessive disbelief; it augments the straying of those who have disbelieved. They alternate the Sacred Months and the regular months, while preserving the number of months consecrated by GOD. They thus violate what GOD has consecrated.

The consequences of the compression are not abstract. Millions of pilgrims, permitted by God to spread across one hundred and twenty days, are funneled by human decree into six - and the stampedes, crushes, and disasters that have repeatedly killed pilgrims at Hajj are the direct, physical price of ignoring God's law.

And to the amputated season, an addition: the ritual visit to the prophet's tomb in Medina, treated as a companion pilgrimage with its own etiquette. Appendix 15 describes pilgrims flocking to "the prophet Muhammad's tomb where they commit the most flagrant acts of idolatry," setting up in effect "two Sacred Mosques" - "a blasphemous violation of the Quran." God appointed one Sacred Masjid (see Pilgrimage (Hajj)). Muhammad, who spent his life fighting idolatry, was made an object of it at his own grave.

VII. The Standard Objection, Answered

The defender of tradition has one great argument, and it deserves to be stated at full strength: "The Quran does not teach you how to pray. It names the Salat but does not detail the units and movements. Without the hadith and the scholars, the rites would have been lost. The additions you call corruption are in fact preservation."

The argument refutes itself twice over.

First, it concedes the decisive fact. If the Quran does not spell out the units of the prayer, then the Muslims who prayed correctly for the two centuries before Bukhari compiled a single hadith were not praying from hadith books. They were praying the way their parents prayed, who prayed the way their parents prayed - a chain of continuous practice reaching back to Abraham, exactly as the Quran describes (16:123, 21:73). The rites never depended on the hadith corpus, because they predate it - and predate Muhammad himself. The scholars did not preserve the prayer; they inherited it, like everyone else, and then claimed custody of it.

Second, test the custodian where the Quran does give details. On ablution, God's Book specifies four steps. The hadith corpus, given the chance to faithfully transmit a rite whose details we can independently check, instead expanded it, tripled it, and hedged it with invented nullifiers. A witness who alters the testimony we can verify cannot be trusted with the testimony we cannot.

The thoughtful traditionalist may press once more: "But continuous practice can itself be corrupted. Without a written check, how would you know the inherited rites are sound?" The question is fair - and it is answered. There is a written check: the Quran. Whatever the practicing community carried that conflicts with God's Book falls - the added names in the prayer fall to 72:18, the extra ablution steps fall to 5:6, the compressed Hajj falls to 2:197 and 9:37. Whatever survives the Quran's filter stands confirmed. The check the traditionalist demands exists; it is simply not the hadith - it is the Book the hadith was written around. See Deen & Millat for this principle in full.

VIII. Conclusion

Survey the pattern one final time. The testimony: amended. The ablution: expanded. The prayer: given a false origin story and an idolatrous insertion. The charity: frozen into an annual tax. The pilgrimage: cut from four months to six days, its calendar altered, a second shrine appended.

Not one of these changes came from God. Every one of them came from men legislating religion in God's name - the precise crime of 42:21 - and every one of them was made possible by a single prior surrender: accepting sources of religious law besides the Quran.

[5:3] ...Today, I have completed your religion, perfected My blessing upon you, and I have decreed Submission as the religion for you...

A completed religion cannot be improved - only corrupted. The way back is not reform, negotiation, or synthesis. It is restoration: practicing the rites as God decreed them in His Book, as Abraham delivered them, and as they were purified anew through God's Messenger of the Covenant.
