How Hadith Corrupted Islam
Islam began as one submission to God alone, complete in a single book. The corruption began the day a second authority was set beside that book, and the religion started to divide, harden, and drift.
I. The One Book and the Second Authority
Islam, in its origin, is submission to God alone, and its scripture is one book that God calls complete and fully detailed (6:114, 6:38, 12:111, 16:89), needing no supplement in order to be practiced. The physical religion the believer inherits - the Contact Prayers, the obligatory charity, the fast of Ramadan, the pilgrimage - did not reach us through hadith either; it came down intact from the time of Abraham (2:128, 22:78), and was restored to its pure practice in our own age by God's messenger Rashad Khalifa. None of that is what corrupted the faith.
The corruption entered through a single move made after the prophet died: the decision to treat a second body of words, the reports later gathered as hadith, as a source of law standing beside the book of God. Muhammad was indeed God's messenger, but his sole commissioned duty was to deliver the message (5:92, 64:12); the Quran he delivered is God's speech, not his own. To raise the collected reports of his sayings to the rank of binding law is to seat a second author beside God in the one domain - legislation - that scripture reserves for God alone. The Quran has a name for exactly this act:
"They follow idols who decree for them religious laws never authorized by GOD. If it were not for the predetermined decision, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the transgressors have incurred a painful retribution." (42:21)
Setting up a co-lawgiver beside God is a form of the one sin the Quran calls unforgivable, idolatry (4:48, 6:121). What follows on this page is the wreckage of that one decision: one submission split into rival sects, a thicket of prohibitions God never spoke, a body of law grown alien to the book it claims to serve, and, at the end of it, the complete book itself pushed into the background by the commentary built around it.
II. One Submission Split into Sects and Schools
The Quran could not be more explicit that the religion is one and must never be divided. Believers are commanded to hold fast, all of them together, to the rope of God and not to separate (3:103); to uphold the one religion decreed for every prophet and not to divide it (42:13); and those who split their faith into sects are disowned outright:
"Those who divide themselves into sects do not belong with you. Their judgment rests with GOD, then He will inform them of everything they had done." (6:159)
Set beside this the saying the tradition preserves and repeats, which does not merely predict the fracture but frames it as destiny:
Jami at-Tirmidhi - "My Ummah will split into seventy-three sects. All of them are in the Fire Except one sect." (Jami at-Tirmidhi 40:2641)
From that seed grew the sects and the rival schools of jurisprudence, each with its own verdicts, each certain it was the single saved remnant. The tradition cannot even keep its story straight about what the prophet left behind as authority. The same farewell sermon survives in three incompatible endings, and each one founded a different party:
"I leave for you the Quran alone." (Sahih Muslim 15:1218)
"Quran and Sunnah." (Muwatta Malik 46:3)
"Quran and Ahl al-bayt." (Sahih Muslim 44:2408)
A single consistent source produces one community; a corpus that contradicts itself on its own foundation produces many. The very division the Quran forbids is what the second authority manufactured.
"(Do not fall in idol worship,) like those who divide their religion into sects; each party rejoicing with what they have." (30:32)
III. Rites and Prohibitions God Never Decreed
Here a distinction must be kept exact. The rites God ordained were never the problem, and nothing on this page is aimed at them. What hadith added was a second layer laid on top of the God-given religion: a dense code of new prohibitions that forbade what God had left lawful, and new observances He never decreed. God warned against this precise act by name - inventing "This is lawful, and this is unlawful" (16:116) and attributing it to Him.
The Quran's dietary law is short and closed. It names the few forbidden things and declares all seafood lawful (5:96), and in the same passage that lists them it announces the religion complete:
"Prohibited for you are animals that die of themselves, blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. (Animals that die of themselves include those) strangled, struck with an object, fallen from a height, gored, attacked by a wild animal - unless you save your animal before it dies - and animals sacrificed on altars. Also prohibited is dividing the meat through a game of chance; this is an abomination. Today, the disbelievers have given up concerning (the eradication of) your religion; do not fear them and fear Me instead. Today, I have completed your religion, perfected My blessing upon you, and I have decreed Submission as the religion for you. If one is forced by famine (to eat prohibited food), without being deliberately sinful, then GOD is Forgiver, Merciful." (5:3)
Yet the collections multiplied the forbidden far beyond anything in the book. They prohibited the meat of the domestic donkey:
Sahih Bukhari - "Prohibited the eating of donkey's meat." (Sahih Bukhari 72:53)
and every predator the Quran never mentions:
Sahih Muslim - forbidden are "all fanged beasts of prey, and all the birds having talons." (Sahih Muslim 21:4752)
They forbade music, down to the sound of a bell:
Sahih Muslim - "The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan." (Sahih Muslim 37:159)
They forbade silk and gold to half the community:
Sunan an-Nasai - "Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males." (Sunan an-Nasai 48:109)
and they ordered the household emptied of dogs:
Sahih Bukhari - "Angels do not enter a house which has either a dog or a picture." (Sahih Bukhari 4:54:539)
They condemned chess and board games (Sahih Muslim 41:11), images, and much else the Quran nowhere touches. Every one of these forbids something God allowed. None of it descends from Abraham; all of it was nailed onto the religion by later hands and, in time, mistaken by whole generations for the religion itself. The five pillars stand where God set them; this scaffolding was never part of them.
IV. Law Hardened into Something Alien
The gravest damage was to law. The Quran's penal code is specific, bounded, and hard to invoke by design. For adultery it decrees a single fixed penalty, a hundred lashes (24:2), fenced behind an almost impossible requirement of four eyewitnesses (24:4, 24:13) whose absence turns the accusation back upon the accuser. Hadith set that aside and imported death by stoning, a penalty found nowhere in the Quran but written plainly in earlier scripture (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22):
Sahih Bukhari - of the man who confessed, the order came, "Go and stone him to death." (Sahih Bukhari 7:63:196)
The second caliph is recorded insisting the punishment had been carried out (Sahih Bukhari 8:82:816, 817); and to close the gap between this practice and a book that never authorizes it, the tradition even claims a stoning verse once existed but was lost when a domestic animal ate the page it was written on (Ibn Majah 3:9:1944) - a report that impugns the very preservation God guarantees for His book (15:9). For leaving the religion, where the Quran prescribes no earthly penalty at all, hadith prescribed death:
Sahih Bukhari - "If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him." (Sahih Bukhari 4:52:260)
On foundations like these the schools erected the vast structure of fiqh, a law-code that in places contradicts the book outright - the ban on shellfish, for one, standing against the Quran's plain permission of all seafood. The fuller catalog of such collisions is set out in Contradictions with the Quran. What resulted was a body of law increasingly alien to the scripture in whose name it ruled.
V. The Displacement of God's Complete Book
A second authority never sits quietly beside the first; it displaces it. In practice the hadith became the lens through which the Quran was read, and wherever the two collided the report prevailed and the verse was explained away. The book God had already declared perfected (5:3) and fully detailed (6:114) was treated as though it were missing the very things a later corpus had to be assembled to supply.
"These are GOD's revelations that we recite to you truthfully. In which Hadith other than GOD and His revelations do they believe?" (45:6)
The deepest irony is that the tradition's own soundest memory forbids the thing that was built:
Musnad Ahmad - "Do not write down anything of me except the Quran." (Musnad Ahmad 10966; Sahih Muslim 42:7147)
A book God called complete was pushed into the background, and a commentary compiled generations after the prophet became the operative religion; the story of how late and how contested that compilation was is traced in The Earliest Hadith Compilations. To obey the messenger, the Quran teaches, is to obey the message he was sent to deliver, not to gather his biography into a second scripture; his duty was delivery and nothing beyond it. The book he delivered was already fully detailed, and it was enough.
VI. The Remedy - Return to the Quran Alone
The cure is not another sect or a newer book. It is subtraction. Set down the second authority and the religion collapses back into the one submission it always was, undivided, its law once again the law of God.
"You shall hold fast to the rope of GOD, all of you, and do not be divided. Recall GOD's blessings upon you - you used to be enemies and He reconciled your hearts. By His grace, you became brethren. You were at the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you therefrom. GOD thus explains His revelations for you, that you may be guided." (3:103)
Returning to the Quran alone takes nothing from the believer that God ordained. The Contact Prayers, the charity, the fast, and the pilgrimage remain exactly where they always stood, received from Abraham and performed as God decreed - the practice reaching us generation to generation, and set out in how to perform the Contact Prayer. Only the human additions fall away. What is left is what stood there at the beginning: God, His complete book, and a servant who submits to Him and guards against ever setting a partner beside Him.
"You shall submit to Him, reverence Him, observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), and - whatever you do - do not ever fall into idol worship." (30:31)
The whole of the corruption can be stated in one line, and so can its remedy. A second authority was set beside the book of God, and the religion divided, hardened, and drifted. Remove it, and the answer is the same one the first believers gave: the Quran, and the Quran alone.
