Sura 56: Al-Waaqe‘ah (The Inevitable) - Quran Inspector

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِbis'miٱللَّهِl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmi

[56:1] When the inevitable comes to pass.

إِذَاidhāوَقَعَتِwaqaʿatiٱلْوَاقِعَةُl-wāqiʿatu ﴿١﴾

[56:2] Nothing can stop it from happening.

لَيْسَlaysaلِوَقْعَتِهَاliwaqʿatihāكَاذِبَةٌkādhibatun ﴿٢﴾

[56:3] It will lower some, and raise others.

خَافِضَةٌkhāfiḍatunرَّافِعَةٌrāfiʿatun ﴿٣﴾

[56:4] The earth will be shaken up.

إِذَاidhāرُجَّتِrujjatiٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuرَجًّاrajjan ﴿٤﴾

[56:5] The mountains will be wiped out.

وَبُسَّتِwabussatiٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluبَسًّاbassan ﴿٥﴾

[56:6] As if they never existed.

فَكَانَتْfakānatهَبَآءًhabāanمُّنۢبَثًّاmunbathan ﴿٦﴾

[56:7] You will be stratified into three kinds.

وَكُنتُمْwakuntumأَزْوَٰجًاazwājanثَلَـٰثَةًthalāthatan ﴿٧﴾

[56:8] Those who deserved bliss will be in bliss.

فَأَصْحَـٰبُfa-aṣḥābuٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanatiمَآmāأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābuٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanati ﴿٨﴾

[56:9] Those who deserved misery will be in misery.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamatiمَآmāأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābuٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamati ﴿٩﴾

[56:10] Then there is the elite of the elite.

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَwal-sābiqūnaٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَl-sābiqūna ﴿١٠﴾

[56:11] They are those who will be closest (to GOD).

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūna ﴿١١﴾

[56:12] In the gardens of bliss.

فِىfīجَنَّـٰتِjannātiٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi ﴿١٢﴾

[56:13] Many from the first generations.*

ثُلَّةٌthullatunمِّنَminaٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna ﴿١٣﴾

*56:13-40 People who believe and nourish their souls through worshiping God alone are destined for the High Heaven. The contemporary followers of each messenger invariably suffer persecution from the traditionalists and adherents of the corrupted religion. Thus, they have a special place reserved for them in the High Heaven. All people who die before the age of 40 go to the Lower Heaven, at least (46:15).

[56:14] Few from the later generations.

وَقَلِيلٌwaqalīlunمِّنَminaٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīna ﴿١٤﴾

[56:15] On luxurious furnishings.

عَلَىٰʿalāسُرُرٍsururinمَّوْضُونَةٍmawḍūnatin ﴿١٥﴾

[56:16] Enjoying everything, they will be neighbors.

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَmuttakiīnaعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāمُتَقَـٰبِلِينَmutaqābilīna ﴿١٦﴾

[56:17] Serving them will be immortal servants.

يَطُوفُyaṭūfuعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimوِلْدَٰنٌwil'dānunمُّخَلَّدُونَmukhalladūna ﴿١٧﴾

[56:18] With cups, pitchers and pure drinks.

بِأَكْوَابٍbi-akwābinوَأَبَارِيقَwa-abārīqaوَكَأْسٍwakasinمِّنminمَّعِينٍmaʿīnin ﴿١٨﴾

[56:19] They never run out, nor do they get bored.

لَّاlāيُصَدَّعُونَyuṣaddaʿūnaعَنْهَاʿanhāوَلَاwalāيُنزِفُونَyunzifūna ﴿١٩﴾

[56:20] Fruits of their choice.

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍwafākihatinمِّمَّاmimmāيَتَخَيَّرُونَyatakhayyarūna ﴿٢٠﴾

[56:21] Meat of birds that they desire.

وَلَحْمِwalaḥmiطَيْرٍṭayrinمِّمَّاmimmāيَشْتَهُونَyashtahūna ﴿٢١﴾

[56:22] Beautiful mates.

وَحُورٌwaḥūrunعِينٌʿīnun ﴿٢٢﴾

[56:23] Like protected pearls.

كَأَمْثَـٰلِka-amthāliٱللُّؤْلُؤِl-lu'lu-iٱلْمَكْنُونِl-maknūni ﴿٢٣﴾

[56:24] Rewards for their works.

جَزَآءًۢjazāanبِمَاbimāكَانُوا۟kānūيَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna ﴿٢٤﴾

[56:25] They never hear any nonsense therein, nor sinful utterances.

لَاlāيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnaفِيهَاfīhāلَغْوًاlaghwanوَلَاwalāتَأْثِيمًاtathīman ﴿٢٥﴾

[56:26] Only the utterance: "Peace, peace."

إِلَّاillāقِيلًاqīlanسَلَـٰمًاsalāmanسَلَـٰمًاsalāman ﴿٢٦﴾

[56:27] Those of the right side, will be on the right side.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīniمَآmāأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābuٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni ﴿٢٧﴾

[56:28] In lush orchards.

فِىfīسِدْرٍsid'rinمَّخْضُودٍmakhḍūdin ﴿٢٨﴾

[56:29] Fragrant fruits.

وَطَلْحٍwaṭalḥinمَّنضُودٍmanḍūdin ﴿٢٩﴾

[56:30] Extended shade.

وَظِلٍّwaẓillinمَّمْدُودٍmamdūdin ﴿٣٠﴾

[56:31] Abundant water.

وَمَآءٍwamāinمَّسْكُوبٍmaskūbin ﴿٣١﴾

[56:32] Many fruits.

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍwafākihatinكَثِيرَةٍkathīratin ﴿٣٢﴾

[56:33] Never ending; never forbidden.

لَّاlāمَقْطُوعَةٍmaqṭūʿatinوَلَاwalāمَمْنُوعَةٍmamnūʿatin ﴿٣٣﴾

[56:34] Luxurious furnishings.

وَفُرُشٍwafurushinمَّرْفُوعَةٍmarfūʿatin ﴿٣٤﴾

[56:35] We create for them mates.

إِنَّآinnāأَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّanshanāhunnaإِنشَآءًinshāan ﴿٣٥﴾

[56:36] Never previously touched.

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّfajaʿalnāhunnaأَبْكَارًاabkāran ﴿٣٦﴾

[56:37] Perfectly matched.

عُرُبًاʿurubanأَتْرَابًاatrāban ﴿٣٧﴾

[56:38] For those on the right side.

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِli-aṣḥābiٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni ﴿٣٨﴾

[56:39] Many from the early generations.

ثُلَّةٌthullatunمِّنَminaٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna ﴿٣٩﴾

[56:40] Many from the later generations.*

وَثُلَّةٌwathullatunمِّنَminaٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīna ﴿٤٠﴾

[56:41] Those of the left, will be on the left.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuٱلشِّمَالِl-shimāliمَآmāأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābuٱلشِّمَالِl-shimāli ﴿٤١﴾

[56:42] In misery and inferno.

فِىfīسَمُومٍsamūminوَحَمِيمٍwaḥamīmin ﴿٤٢﴾

[56:43] Even their shade is hot.

وَظِلٍّwaẓillinمِّنminيَحْمُومٍyaḥmūmin ﴿٤٣﴾

[56:44] Never cool, never tolerable.

لَّاlāبَارِدٍbāridinوَلَاwalāكَرِيمٍkarīmin ﴿٤٤﴾

[56:45] They used to be rich.

إِنَّهُمْinnahumكَانُوا۟kānūقَبْلَqablaذَٰلِكَdhālikaمُتْرَفِينَmut'rafīna ﴿٤٥﴾

[56:46] They insisted on the great blasphemy.

وَكَانُوا۟wakānūيُصِرُّونَyuṣirrūnaعَلَىʿalāٱلْحِنثِl-ḥinthiٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmi ﴿٤٦﴾

[56:47] They said, "After we die and turn to dust and bones, we get resurrected?

وَكَانُوا۟wakānūيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnaأَئِذَاa-idhāمِتْنَاmit'nāوَكُنَّاwakunnāتُرَابًاturābanوَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanأَءِنَّاa-innāلَمَبْعُوثُونَlamabʿūthūna ﴿٤٧﴾

[56:48] "Does this include our forefathers?"

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَاawaābāunāٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūna ﴿٤٨﴾

[56:49] Say, "The early generations and the later generations.

قُلْqulإِنَّinnaٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnaوَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَwal-ākhirīna ﴿٤٩﴾

[56:50] "Will be summoned to a meeting on a predetermined day.

لَمَجْمُوعُونَlamajmūʿūnaإِلَىٰilāمِيقَـٰتِmīqātiيَوْمٍyawminمَّعْلُومٍmaʿlūmin ﴿٥٠﴾

[56:51] "Then you, O disbelieving strayers.

ثُمَّthummaإِنَّكُمْinnakumأَيُّهَاayyuhāٱلضَّآلُّونَl-ḍālūnaٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَl-mukadhibūna ﴿٥١﴾

[56:52] "Will eat from the trees of bitterness.

لَـَٔاكِلُونَlaākilūnaمِنminشَجَرٍshajarinمِّنminزَقُّومٍzaqqūmin ﴿٥٢﴾

[56:53] "Filling your bellies therefrom.

فَمَالِـُٔونَfamāliūnaمِنْهَاmin'hāٱلْبُطُونَl-buṭūna ﴿٥٣﴾

[56:54] "Then drinking on top of it hellish drinks.

فَشَـٰرِبُونَfashāribūnaعَلَيْهِʿalayhiمِنَminaٱلْحَمِيمِl-ḥamīmi ﴿٥٤﴾

[56:55] "Then adding drinks of sand."

فَشَـٰرِبُونَfashāribūnaشُرْبَshur'baٱلْهِيمِl-hīmi ﴿٥٥﴾

[56:56] Such is their share on the Day of Judgment.

هَـٰذَاhādhāنُزُلُهُمْnuzuluhumيَوْمَyawmaٱلدِّينِl-dīni ﴿٥٦﴾

[56:57] We have created you, if you could only believe!

نَحْنُnaḥnuخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْkhalaqnākumفَلَوْلَاfalawlāتُصَدِّقُونَtuṣaddiqūna ﴿٥٧﴾

[56:58] Have you noted the semen that you produce?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمafara-aytumمَّاmāتُمْنُونَtum'nūna ﴿٥٨﴾

[56:59] Did you create it, or did we?

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumتَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓtakhluqūnahuأَمْamنَحْنُnaḥnuٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَl-khāliqūna ﴿٥٩﴾

[56:60] We have predetermined death for you. Nothing can stop us -

نَحْنُnaḥnuقَدَّرْنَاqaddarnāبَيْنَكُمُbaynakumuٱلْمَوْتَl-mawtaوَمَاwamāنَحْنُnaḥnuبِمَسْبُوقِينَbimasbūqīna ﴿٦٠﴾

[56:61] from substituting new generations in your place, and establishing what you do not know.

عَلَىٰٓʿalāأَنanنُّبَدِّلَnubaddilaأَمْثَـٰلَكُمْamthālakumوَنُنشِئَكُمْwanunshi-akumفِىfīمَاmāلَاlāتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna ﴿٦١﴾

[56:62] You know about the first creation. Do you not remember?

وَلَقَدْwalaqadعَلِمْتُمُʿalim'tumuٱلنَّشْأَةَl-nashataٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāفَلَوْلَاfalawlāتَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūna ﴿٦٢﴾

[56:63] Have you noted the crops you reap?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمafara-aytumمَّاmāتَحْرُثُونَtaḥruthūna ﴿٦٣﴾

[56:64] Did you grow them, or did we?

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumتَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓtazraʿūnahuأَمْamنَحْنُnaḥnuٱلزَّٰرِعُونَl-zāriʿūna ﴿٦٤﴾

[56:65] If we will, we can turn it into hay. Then you will lament:

لَوْlawنَشَآءُnashāuلَجَعَلْنَـٰهُlajaʿalnāhuحُطَـٰمًاḥuṭāmanفَظَلْتُمْfaẓaltumتَفَكَّهُونَtafakkahūna ﴿٦٥﴾

[56:66] "We lost.

إِنَّاinnāلَمُغْرَمُونَlamugh'ramūna ﴿٦٦﴾

[56:67] "We are deprived."

بَلْbalنَحْنُnaḥnuمَحْرُومُونَmaḥrūmūna ﴿٦٧﴾

[56:68] Have you noted the water you drink?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuٱلْمَآءَl-māaٱلَّذِىalladhīتَشْرَبُونَtashrabūna ﴿٦٨﴾

[56:69] Did you send it down from the clouds, or did we?

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumأَنزَلْتُمُوهُanzaltumūhuمِنَminaٱلْمُزْنِl-muz'niأَمْamنَحْنُnaḥnuٱلْمُنزِلُونَl-munzilūna ﴿٦٩﴾

[56:70] If we will, we can make it salty. You should be thankful.

لَوْlawنَشَآءُnashāuجَعَلْنَـٰهُjaʿalnāhuأُجَاجًاujājanفَلَوْلَاfalawlāتَشْكُرُونَtashkurūna ﴿٧٠﴾

[56:71] Have you noted the fire you ignite?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuٱلنَّارَl-nāraٱلَّتِىallatīتُورُونَtūrūna ﴿٧١﴾

[56:72] Did you initiate its tree, or did we?

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumأَنشَأْتُمْanshatumشَجَرَتَهَآshajaratahāأَمْamنَحْنُnaḥnuٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَl-munshiūna ﴿٧٢﴾

[56:73] We rendered it a reminder, and a useful tool for the users.

نَحْنُnaḥnuجَعَلْنَـٰهَاjaʿalnāhāتَذْكِرَةًtadhkiratanوَمَتَـٰعًاwamatāʿanلِّلْمُقْوِينَlil'muq'wīna ﴿٧٣﴾

[56:74] You shall glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.

فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥبِٱسْمِbi-is'miرَبِّكَrabbikaٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmi ﴿٧٤﴾

[56:75] I swear by the positions of the stars.

فَلَآfalāأُقْسِمُuq'simuبِمَوَٰقِعِbimawāqiʿiٱلنُّجُومِl-nujūmi ﴿٧٥﴾

*56:75-76 Our universe, the smallest and innermost of seven universes, contains a billion galaxies, a billion trillion stars, spanning billions of light years. These uncountable decillions of heavenly bodies maintain their orbits in a divinely controlled precision. The more we learn, the more we realize how awesome this oath is. See Appendix 6.

[56:76] This is an oath, if you only knew, that is awesome.*

وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuلَقَسَمٌlaqasamunلَّوْlawتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaعَظِيمٌʿaẓīmun ﴿٧٦﴾

[56:77] This is an honorable Quran.

إِنَّهُۥinnahuلَقُرْءَانٌlaqur'ānunكَرِيمٌkarīmun ﴿٧٧﴾

[56:78] In a protected book.

فِىfīكِتَـٰبٍkitābinمَّكْنُونٍmaknūnin ﴿٧٨﴾

[56:79] None can grasp it except the sincere.*

لَّاlāيَمَسُّهُۥٓyamassuhuإِلَّاillāٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَl-muṭaharūna ﴿٧٩﴾

*56:79 The insincere who are not satisfied with the Quran alone are divinely prevented from understanding the Quran. This concept is repeated throughout the Quran (17:45, 18:57). Consequently, they cannot understand this verse. For example, compare this translation of 7:3, 17:46, 41:44, & 56:79 with other translations.

[56:80] A revelation from the Lord of the universe.

تَنزِيلٌtanzīlunمِّنminرَّبِّrabbiٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna ﴿٨٠﴾

[56:81] Are you disregarding this narration?

أَفَبِهَـٰذَاafabihādhāٱلْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthiأَنتُمantumمُّدْهِنُونَmud'hinūna ﴿٨١﴾

[56:82] Do you make it your business that you disbelieve?

وَتَجْعَلُونَwatajʿalūnaرِزْقَكُمْriz'qakumأَنَّكُمْannakumتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūna ﴿٨٢﴾

[56:83] When the time comes and it (your soul) reaches your throat -

فَلَوْلَآfalawlāإِذَاidhāبَلَغَتِbalaghatiٱلْحُلْقُومَl-ḥul'qūma ﴿٨٣﴾

[56:84] you will then look around.

وَأَنتُمْwa-antumحِينَئِذٍḥīna-idhinتَنظُرُونَtanẓurūna ﴿٨٤﴾

[56:85] We are closer to it than you are, but you do not see.

وَنَحْنُwanaḥnuأَقْرَبُaqrabuإِلَيْهِilayhiمِنكُمْminkumوَلَـٰكِنwalākinلَّاlāتُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūna ﴿٨٥﴾

[56:86] If it is true that you do not owe any accounting -

فَلَوْلَآfalawlāإِنinكُنتُمْkuntumغَيْرَghayraمَدِينِينَmadīnīna ﴿٨٦﴾

[56:87] why do you not restore (your soul), if you are truthful?

تَرْجِعُونَهَآtarjiʿūnahāإِنinكُنتُمْkuntumصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīna ﴿٨٧﴾

[56:88] If he is one of those close to Me -

فَأَمَّآfa-ammāإِنinكَانَkānaمِنَminaٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَl-muqarabīna ﴿٨٨﴾

[56:89] then joy, flowers, and gardens of bliss.

فَرَوْحٌfarawḥunوَرَيْحَانٌwarayḥānunوَجَنَّتُwajannatuنَعِيمٍnaʿīmin ﴿٨٩﴾

[56:90] And if he is one of the right -

وَأَمَّآwa-ammāإِنinكَانَkānaمِنْminأَصْحَـٰبِaṣḥābiٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni ﴿٩٠﴾

[56:91] peace is the lot of those on the right.

فَسَلَـٰمٌfasalāmunلَّكَlakaمِنْminأَصْحَـٰبِaṣḥābiٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni ﴿٩١﴾

[56:92] But if he is one of the disbelievers, the strayers -

وَأَمَّآwa-ammāإِنinكَانَkānaمِنَminaٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnaٱلضَّآلِّينَl-ḍālīna ﴿٩٢﴾

[56:93] then an abode of inferno -

فَنُزُلٌfanuzulunمِّنْminحَمِيمٍḥamīmin ﴿٩٣﴾

[56:94] and burning in Hell.

وَتَصْلِيَةُwataṣliyatuجَحِيمٍjaḥīmin ﴿٩٤﴾

[56:95] This is the absolute truth.

إِنَّinnaهَـٰذَاhādhāلَهُوَlahuwaحَقُّḥaqquٱلْيَقِينِl-yaqīni ﴿٩٥﴾

[56:96] You shall glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.

فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥبِٱسْمِbi-is'miرَبِّكَrabbikaٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmi ﴿٩٦﴾
