The Misinterpretation of 64:12
"The sole duty of the messenger is to deliver" - read as a conditional that activates only when people turn away. The Quran states it unconditionally, three times.
I. The Verse and the Evasion
"You shall obey GOD and you shall obey the messenger. If you turn away, then the sole mission of our messenger is to deliver the message." (64:12)
The declaration that delivery is the messenger's sole mission dissolves the hadith religion on contact - a messenger whose whole office is delivering the Quran leaves nothing else to obey. So a workaround was devised: the "sole duty" clause, they argue, applies only if you turn away - toward the rejecters his duty shrinks to delivery, but toward believers he is also teacher, purifier, and legislator, whose sunna binds. The workaround survives exactly as long as it takes to open the parallel verses.
II. Stated Without the Condition
"The sole duty of the messenger is to deliver the message, and GOD knows everything you declare and everything you conceal." (5:99)
No "if you turn away" - the statement stands absolute, addressed to everyone, believers included. And 24:54 lays out the full anatomy: "Say, 'Obey GOD, and obey the messenger.' If they refuse, then he is responsible for his obligations, and you are responsible for your obligations. If you obey him, you will be guided. The sole duty of the messenger is to deliver (the message)." Four independent truths stand side by side - obey; each bears his own responsibility; obedience brings guidance; delivery is the sole duty - each affirmed elsewhere on its own, none conditioned on the others. The "if you turn away" clause in 64:12 does not create the sole-duty rule; it applies it to the rejecter's case: even if you refuse, the messenger will not compel you, for compulsion was never in his commission (88:21-22, 50:45). The duty was delivery before you refused, and delivery after.
III. Reciting, Purifying, Teaching - All Inside Delivery
But does 2:151 not add duties - reciting, purifying, teaching? Look at each. Reciting is delivery's very form: he delivered the Book by reciting it exactly as he received it (75:18). Purifying is God's act flowing through the delivered message - "none of you would have been purified, but GOD purifies whomever He wills" (24:21); the messenger delivers, whoever follows is purified by God; even in 9:103 it is the charity itself that purifies, as the giver purifies his own soul by giving (92:18) - and Sura 80 tells the prophet outright that he could not guarantee anyone's purification (80:3-7). Teaching the scripture is delivering its specifics - the wording, the order, the recitation - while understanding remains God's gift: "You are not responsible for guiding anyone. GOD is the only one who guides..." (2:272), for the true Teacher of the Quran is the Most Gracious Himself (55:1-2), who reserved its explanation to Himself (75:19). Every listed function is a facet of one commission. Nothing in the list opens a second channel of law - and the verse that would have to authorize one instead closes it: whoever needed the messenger to be more than a deliverer received, in the very sentence commanding his obedience, the definition that he is not.
