Yes - and more. The male and female is the pairing nearest to us; the verse's own word is "everything," and the Book widens the lens itself.

I. The Verse, Affirmed

"We created a pair (male and female) of everything, that you may take heed." (51:49)

The male and female reading is true, and it is where the verse means us to start: it is the pairing every listener knows from the inside, the one Rashad Khalifa's rendering names in the verse itself. Humanity comes as male and female; so do the animals of the field and "of everything" in the living register familiar to the verse's first audience. But notice the noun God chose. The Arabic asserts that of everything (kulli shay'in) He created zawjayn - a pair - and a zawj in the Quran's usage is a counterpart: a complementary partner, of which male and female is the clearest instance, not the outer boundary. Skeptics who point at asexual organisms are answering a smaller sentence than the one God wrote; the verse never said "of every living thing, a mate." It said: of everything, a counterpart - and then invited us to take heed of how far that reaches.

II. The Book Widens the Lens Itself

The parallel verse extends the principle explicitly beyond the living, and beyond the known:

"Glory be to the One who created all kinds of plants from the earth, as well as themselves, and other creations that they do not even know." (36:36)

And watch what the passage does next. Within four verses, God names pair after pair from the sky itself - the night and the day, the sun and the moon:

"The sun is never to catch up with the moon - the night and the day never deviate - each of them is floating in its own orbit." (36:40)

Counterparts in the heavens, bound in complementary courses, each running its own orbit - pairing as the architecture of the cosmos, stated in the immediate neighborhood of the pairs-verse. The Quran's complements run everywhere on this wider register: night and day, the heavens and the earth, this life and the Hereafter, sun and moon, land and sea - and 36:36 adds the standing promise that the principle extends into "creations that they do not even know." Fourteen centuries ago, the Book put on record that the pair-structure of reality would outrun anything its first readers could inventory.

III. The Pairing Beneath Everything

Then the twentieth century looked where no one had looked. Physics found that pairing is not merely a feature of living things but of existence itself: for every elementary particle there exists an antiparticle - identical in mass, opposite in charge. The electron has its positron; matter itself comes paired with antimatter. What began as theoretical necessity became laboratory fact: antimatter has been produced and measured, atoms of anti-hydrogen manufactured and studied at CERN. Down at the floor of creation - beneath chemistry, beneath biology, beneath everything a classical commentator could have inventoried - everything comes in pairs, exactly as 51:49 states and exactly as 36:36 promised of the creations "they do not even know."

So the honest answer to the title's question is yes, and then some. Male and female is the verse's nearest truth, confirmed at every farm and cradle; orbits, opposites, and antiparticles are the same truth at wider and deeper registers of "everything." The closing clause now reads with full weight: "that you may take heed" - because a thing that exists as one member of a designed complement points beyond itself, and a universe paired at every level, from spouses to sun-and-moon to matter-and-antimatter, points to the One who has no counterpart: "None equals Him" (112:4). Everything is a zawj. Only the Creator is One.
