The Manipulation of 33:59
"Lengthen their garments" became "cover everything." The verse's own purpose clause - to be recognized - refutes the erasure read into it.
I. The Verse
"O prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the wives of the believers that they shall lengthen their garments. Thus, they will be recognized (as righteous women) and avoid being insulted. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful." (33:59)
The operative verb is from the root d-n-w - to bring low, bring near - here: to let the outer garment hang lower, lengthen it. The Quran's own usage fixes the sense: in 69:23, Paradise's fruits are daniyah - hanging low, within reach; in 53:8 the verb describes drawing nearer. From this modest instruction - let your garments hang longer - interpreters extracted the maximal doctrine: the woman covered head to toe, and in the extreme readings, face included, eyes peering through a slit. A command to lower a garment became a command to disappear.
II. The Purpose Clause Refutes the Doctrine
God states why: "Thus, they will be recognized (as righteous women) and avoid being insulted." The garment's function is identification - dignity made visible, so that the harassers of Medina's streets would know a woman of the believers and hold off. Recognition presupposes a visible person; a woman erased into full cover is precisely not recognizable. The command's own logic runs the same way: "lengthen your garment" is only a meaningful instruction to a woman in ordinary visible dress - if God had already mandated total coverage, there would be nothing left to lengthen, and the verse would be legislating the impossible. The instruction presupposes exactly the normal dress the extremists forbid. The total-cover doctrine thus runs the verse's logic backward: it takes an instruction whose declared purpose is to distinguish righteous women in public, and uses it to remove them from public visibility altogether. A reading that defeats the verse's own stated objective is not an interpretation of the verse; it is a replacement for it.
Notice also what the instruction is not: no body part is named, no penalty attached, no policing commissioned. It is guidance of dignity - lengthen the garment, carry the bearing of a believing woman - in the same register as its companion verse's actual command, "cover their chests" (24:31), and under the same principle that crowns them both: "the best garment is the garment of righteousness" (7:26).
III. Culture Dressed As Revelation
The distance between "lengthen their garments" and the burqa is not exegesis; it is centuries of custom retro-fitted with a verse. The Quran legislates modesty in two calm instructions - the chest covered, the garment lengthened - and reserves its severity for those who legislate beyond it: "You shall not utter lies with your own tongues stating: 'This is lawful, and this is unlawful,' to fabricate lies and attribute them to GOD..." (16:116). Whoever demands of women what these verses do not demand speaks for a culture, not for God - and whoever accuses the verse of erasing women has not read its purpose clause, where God's stated concern is the opposite: that believing women walk recognized, respected, and unharmed.
