How Hadith Contradict Science and Reason

The tradition graded these reports sound; the sky, the body, and plain reason grade them false - and on that question the Quran stands with the eye and the mind.

I. Revelation That Invites the Eye and the Mind

The Quran does not ask to be believed against the world it describes. It stakes its own case on that world and sends the reader out to check it, insisting that its proof is written both in the horizons overhead and in the reader himself.

"We will show them our proofs in the horizons, and within themselves, until they realize that this is the truth. Is your Lord not sufficient, as a witness of all things?" (41:53)

And it makes verification a duty rather than a courtesy, arming the believer with the very faculties by which a claim is tested and holding him answerable for using them.

"You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them." (17:36)

A scripture that rests its truth on observation and on the reader's own brain cannot be neutral about whether the literature later gathered in its name describes the sun, the body, and the animals correctly. The hadith corpus was written down generations after the prophet and graded by its own compilers as sahih - sound. Held up to the sky and to plain reason, its soundest narrations do not merely stumble; they contradict what any observer can see. What follows are the exhibits, grouped by the field each one offends, quoted as the collections themselves record them.

One note before they mount up. This site upholds the Contact Prayer, the fast, the obligatory charity, and the pilgrimage exactly as they were inherited, by unbroken practice, from Abraham (2:128, 22:78). Where an exhibit below happens to mention a prayer time, it is the narration's cosmology that stands accused, never the prayer itself, whose form reached the believer wholly apart from these books; for its details see how to perform the Contact Prayer.

II. Cosmology and the Sun

To the Quran the sun is a lamp set in a vast, expanding order; to these reports it is a small errand-runner that travels each night to a berth beneath the Throne and begs permission to return.

Sahih Bukhari - "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west." (Bukhari 4:54:421)

The picture is flatly geocentric, and it invents a physical destination for a star that has none. Other reports give the sun a nightly puddle to sink into,

Sunan Abu Dawud - "It sets in a spring of warm water." (Abu Dawud 4:32:3991)

and post Satan at the doorway of dawn and dusk.

Sahih Muslim - "Do not intend to observe prayer at the time of the rising of the sun nor at its setting, for it rises between the horns of Satan." (Muslim 4:1807)

And when the disc darkens, the corpus reads the event as a fright sent from God rather than a shadow cast by geometry.

Sahih Bukhari - "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse because of the death of someone but Allah frightens His devotees with them." (Bukhari 2:18:158)

But an eclipse is arithmetic. Its hour is computed years in advance and printed in almanacs, and a shadow whose arrival is known to the minute frightens no one and signals nothing. The sun does not run an errand around a still earth, sinks into no spring, and keeps no appointment with the horns of a devil. The Quran's own cosmos is not this cramped machine but an expanse that opened from a single mass, a picture that rewards the astronomer instead of shaming him.

"Do the unbelievers not realize that the heaven and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things. Would they believe?" (21:30)

III. The Shape of the Heavens and the Earth

Push past the sun and the architecture grows stranger, and the corruption does not stop at hadith; it flows into the revered commentaries. Ibn Kathir's tafsir stacks the seven earths upon a cosmic bull standing on a whale:

Tafsir Ibn Kathir - "It was said that Nun is the great whale who is underneath the seven Earths. Furthermore, Al-Baghawy - may Allah rest his soul - and a group of commentators stated that on the back of this whale there is a great rock whose thickness is greater than the width of the heavens and the earth and above this rock is a bull that has forty thousand horns. On the body of this bull are placed the seven earths." (Tafsir Ibn-Kathir)

Above us, the reports hang livestock in the void,

Sunan Abu Dawud - "Above the seventh heaven there is a sea, the distance between whose surface and bottom is like that between one heaven and the next. Above that there are eight mountain goats the distance between whose hoofs and haunches is like the distance between one heaven and the next." (Abu Dawud 40:4705)

and fit the west with a gate measured in decades of travel.

Jami al-Tirmidhi - "There is a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years." (Jami al Tirmidhi 6:45:3535)

The two rivers a farmer can walk to their sources are piped in from Paradise,

Sahih Bukhari - "There ran four rivers, two were hidden and two were visible, I asked, 'What are these two kinds of rivers, O Gabriel?' He replied,' As for the hidden rivers, they are two rivers in Paradise and the visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.'" (Bukhari 5:58:227)

thunder is reassigned from physics to an angel wielding fire,

Jami al-Tirmidhi - "An angel among the angels, who is responsible for the clouds. He has a piece of fire wherever that he drives the clouds wherever Allah wills...It is him, striking the clouds when he drives them on, until it goes where it is ordered." (Tirmidhi 1:44:3117)

and the ordinary heat of midday is blamed on Hell venting to the surface.

Sahih Bukhari - "Pray Zuhr prayer when it becomes (a bit) cooler as the severity of heat is from the raging of the Hell-fire." (Bukhari 1:10:513)

Every one of these is checkable, and every one is wrong. The Nile rises in the highlands of Africa and the Euphrates in the mountains of Anatolia, not in Eden; thunder is the shockwave of lightning heating the air; noon is hot because the sun is overhead, a fact a sundial settles without appeal to a furnace below. None of it survives a first honest look, and looking is exactly what the reader was told to do.

IV. Medicine and Disease

Nowhere is the cost heavier than in medicine, where a false certainty can kill. The corpus first denies that disease spreads at all,

Jami at-Tirmidhi - "One thing does not infect another...A Bedouin said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If a camel gets mangy glands and we leave it at the resting place of camels, then all of the camels get mange?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Who caused the first to get mange? There is no 'Adwa nor safar. Allah created every soul, so he wrote its life, its provision, and its afflictions.'" (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4:6:2143)

then, in the same books, dispenses a pharmacy of its own. It cools a fever as though quenching a coal from Hell,

Sahih Bukhari - "Fever is from the heat of the hellfire; so put it out (cool it) with water." (Bukhari 4:54:486)

sends the ailing to drink camel urine,

Sahih Bukhari - "The climate of Medina did not suit some people, so the Prophet ordered them to follow his shepherd, i.e. his camels, and drink their milk and urine (as a medicine)." (Bukhari 7:71:590)

trusts a single seed against every illness but death,

Sahih Bukhari - "There is healing in Black Cumin for all diseases except death." (Bukhari 7:71:592)

bids the diner dip a fallen fly because one wing is said to carry the antidote to the other,

Sahih Bukhari - "If a housefly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease." (Bukhari 4:54:537)

answers a diagnosis with honey and calls the patient's own body a liar,

Sahih Bukhari - "Let him drink honey...Allah has said the Truth, and the abdomen of your brother has told a lie." (Bukhari 7:71:614)

and prescribes seven particular dates as a shield against poison and sorcery.

Sahih Bukhari - "He who eats seven 'Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them." (Bukhari 7:65:356)

The defect is self-inflicted before science is even consulted: a tradition that declares nothing contagious cannot also explain why it dosed and quarantined. And once science is consulted, the verdict is plain. Contagion is not folklore but microbiology, watched under a lens; no single food cures all disease; urine carries the very pathogens it is offered to treat; and a housefly ferries contamination on both wings, not a cure on one. Reason told the believer to verify a claim before he swallowed it; these reports ask him to swallow first.

V. Biology and the Human Body

Turned on the human body, the same literature misreads birth, inheritance, and anatomy. It opens history with a ninety-foot Adam and a species shrinking ever since,

Sahih Bukhari - "Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall... People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation." (Bukhari 4:55:543)

and traces the colors of mankind to fistfuls of tinted mud.

Jami at-Tirmidhi - "Indeed Allah Most High created Adam from a handful that He took from all of the earth. So the children of Adam come in according with the earth, some of them come red, and white and black, and between that, and the thin, the thick, the filthy, and the clean." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 5:44:2955)

The Quran calls those colors a sign for study, not a stain to be explained by soil.

"Among His proofs are the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors. In these, there are signs for the knowledgeable." (30:22)

Color is pigment, the work of melanin, and the ground tells no story of vanished giants; the earliest humans were shorter than we are, not taller. Yet the reports press on. They fix a child's likeness by whichever parent finishes first,

Sahih Bukhari - "If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the child will resemble her." (Bukhari 4:55:546)

blame a newborn's first cry on a poke from Satan,

Sahih Bukhari - "There is none born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except mary and her child." (Bukhari 4:55:641)

grant the unbeliever a private extra set of intestines,

Sahih Muslim - "A non-Muslim eats in seven intestines whereas a Muslim eats in one intestine." (Muslim 23:5113)

and exempt one bone from the grave as the seed of resurrection.

Sahih Muslim - "There is a bone in the human being which the earth would never consume and it is from this that new bodies would be reconstituted (on the Day of Resurrection)...It is the spinal bone." (Muslim 54:179)

A child's likeness is carried on chromosomes, not decided by timing; a newborn cries because its lungs have just filled with air; and the human gut has one plan, believer and unbeliever alike. Most quotable of all, the corpus draws a fence around what it says only God can know, and inside that fence it places two things now read off a screen and a forecast:

Sahih Bukhari - "Keys of the unseen knowledge are five which nobody knows but Allah . . . nobody knows what will happen tomorrow; nobody knows what is in the womb; nobody knows what he will gain tomorrow; nobody knows at what place he will die; and nobody knows when it will rain." (Bukhari 2:17:149)

Testable Today

Two of the five "locked" secrets are opened every day by anyone who cares to look. An ultrasound names the sex of the child in the womb months before the birth; a meteorologist reads tomorrow's rain off pressure, satellite, and radar with routine success. A boundary that a clinic and a weather service cross each morning was never a boundary at all.

VI. Magic, Satan, and Superstition

Beneath the failed science sits the engine that drives much of it: a world in which the mundane is demonic. A yawn becomes an opening for Satan,

Sahih Bukhari - "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him." (Bukhari 4:54:509)

a heavy sleep is explained by Satan relieving himself in the sleeper's ears,

Sahih Bukhari - "Satan urinated in his ears." (Bukhari 2:21:245)

and the night is passed by a devil lodged in the nostril.

Sahih Muslim - "When any one of you awakes up from sleep and performs ablution, he must clean his nose three times, for the devil spends the night in the interior of his nose." (Muslim 2:462)

Animals are read as omens, the rooster having glimpsed an angel and the donkey a demon,

Sahih Bukhari - "When you hear the crowing of cocks, ask for Allah's Blessings for (their crowing indicates that) they have seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek Refuge with Allah from Satan for (their braying indicates) that they have seen a Satan." (Bukhari 4:54:522)

a black dog is declared not an animal but a devil whose passing is said to cancel a prayer,

Sahih Muslim - "When any one of you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black Dog...The black dog is a devil." (Muslim 4:1032)

monkeys are imagined convening to stone one of their own for adultery,

Sahih Bukhari - "During the pre-Islamic period of ignorance I saw a she-monkey surrounded by a number of monkeys. They were all stoning it, because it had committed illegal sexual intercourse. I too, stoned it along with them." (Bukhari 5:58:188)

and a birthmark is diagnosed as the work of an envious eye.

Sahih Bukhari - "She is under the effect of an evil eye; so treat her with a Ruqya." (Bukhari 7:71:635)

A yawn is the body managing its breath; deep sleep is the brain's doing, not the bladder's; a blocked nose is congestion, cleared by washing, not by evicting a tenant. The Contact Prayer the believer inherited from Abraham carries no rule that a passing dog or woman annuls it; that is graft laid on worship, not worship itself. To hand the natural world over to jinn and the evil eye is to abandon the very looking the Quran commands.

VII. The Verdict of Reason

Set end to end, the exhibits share a single defect: each asks the believer to switch off the faculty the Quran told him to keep on. And the Quran is unsparing about that surrender, ranking the refusal to understand at the very bottom of creation.

"The worst creatures in the sight of GOD are the deaf and dumb, who do not understand." (8:22)

It puts the same confession in the mouths of the regretful, who name understanding as the one thing that would have saved them.

"They also say, 'If we heard or understood, we would not be among the dwellers of Hell!'" (67:10)

Even to those who carry a scripture and read it, the reproach comes as a question, not a decree.

"Do you exhort the people to be righteous, while forgetting yourselves, though you read the scripture? Do you not understand?" (2:44)

The tradition's own honest critics saw the problem and wrote the remedy. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi laid down that a report clashing with sense, with reason, or with the decisive text of the Quran must be rejected outright; applied without flinching, that rule empties the very shelves these exhibits were drawn from. The believer needs no such surgery, because he was handed a Book already fully detailed (6:114) that leaves nothing out (6:38). To prop these tales beside it as religion is to trade a source that is consistent for one that only guesses (10:36), and to raise conjecture into law (42:21) - which the Quran counts among the gravest of errors. The cleaner and older position is the one the Book keeps pointing to: look, verify, think, and hold to the revelation that invited you to do all three. "Which Hadith, other than this, do they uphold?" (77:50). How the Quran itself, and not the corpus, defines obeying the messenger is taken up in Obey God and Obey the Messenger, and its sufficiency in A Fully Detailed Book.
